Teaching Your Dog to Be Gentle Around Young Readers
Practical exercises to help your therapy dog candidate develop the patience and gentleness needed for reading sessions.
# Gentle Giants in Training
Even the sweetest dog needs specific training to interact appropriately with children during reading sessions.
The "Gentle" Command
Start by teaching a "gentle" cue when taking treats. Use soft, slow movements and reward calm behavior.
Desensitization to Touch
Children often pet differently than adults. Practice: - Quick, patting touches - Ear handling - Tail touches - Hugs (for dogs who will encounter them)
Impulse Control Exercises
- Wait at doorways - Leave-it with high-value distractions - Settle on mat while exciting things happen
Book-Specific Training
- Practice lying still while someone reads aloud - Get comfortable with page-turning sounds - Stay calm when shown pictures
Positive Associations
Make every training session fun. Pair children's voices (recordings work well) with treats to create positive associations.
