About Paws & Pages

Founded in 2020, we're on a mission to transform struggling readers into confident book lovers through the power of therapy dogs.

Our Story

Paws & Pages was born from a simple observation: children who struggle with reading often carry anxiety that makes practice feel like punishment. When Dr. Emily Chen, a children's librarian for 15 years, noticed a young boy reading confidently to her golden retriever during a library event, she knew she'd discovered something special.

That moment sparked a movement. Today, Paws & Pages operates in 12 libraries across the region, with 25 certified therapy dog teams bringing joy and confidence to over 500 children each year.

Our program is built on research showing that reading to dogs reduces cortisol levels and increases oxytocin—the 'bonding' hormone. Dogs don't correct pronunciation, don't judge stumbles, and offer unconditional positive regard. For anxious young readers, this judgment-free zone is transformative.

How It Works

A simple four-step journey from signup to success.

1

Parents register their child for a session at a participating library or school. Sessions are free and open to children ages 5-12.

2

Meet Your Reading Buddy

Each child is matched with a certified therapy dog and handler. Together, they find a cozy reading spot in the library.

3

Read & Grow

During 20-30 minute sessions, children read aloud to their furry friend. Dogs listen patiently, offer gentle encouragement (tail wags!), and create a safe space for practice.

4

Track Progress

With regular sessions, we see remarkable improvements in reading fluency, confidence, and—most importantly—love of books.
