# Patience Has Four Legs

Some children come to us ready to read. Diego, 9, was not one of them.

The Situation

Diego's teacher described him as "resistant." His mother used the word "frustrated." Diego himself said nothing at all.

He'd been struggling with reading since second grade. By fourth grade, he'd given up trying.

The First Session

Diego refused to pick up a book. He sat on the floor, arms crossed, while Luna lay nearby.

We didn't push. Luna didn't either.

Week After Week

For three weeks, Diego came to sessions and didn't read. He sat with Luna, sometimes petting her, sometimes just watching her breathe.

We let him.

The Turning Point

During week four, Diego picked up a comic book. He didn't read it aloud, but he read it. Luna rested her head near his knee.

By week six, Diego was whispering words to Luna. By week ten, he was reading short sentences. By week twenty, he finished his first chapter book.

The Lesson

Sometimes children need to feel safe before they can feel capable. Luna gave Diego that safety, asking nothing in return.
