How Biscuit Helped Maya Find Her Voice
Maya hadn't spoken in class for months. Then she met Biscuit, and everything changed.
# Finding Words with Four-Legged Help
When Maya, 7, walked into the library's reading room, she hadn't voluntarily spoken in her classroom for three months. Selective mutism had stolen her voice, but no one told Biscuit.
The Silent Beginning
Maya's mother, Sarah, was skeptical. "She won't even whisper to me in public," she explained to our volunteer coordinator. "I don't expect miracles."
We didn't promise any. We just introduced Maya to Biscuit, our gentle golden retriever who has a gift for patience.
Something Shifts
For the first three sessions, Maya sat near Biscuit but didn't read. She petted her, showed her pictures in books, and once鈥攋ust once鈥攕miled when Biscuit's tail thumped against the floor.
The Breakthrough
It happened during week four. Maya was showing Biscuit a picture of a dog that looked just like her. "Look," she whispered, so quietly we almost missed it. "That's you."
Biscuit's tail wagged. Maya giggled. And then, in a voice barely above a breath, she began to read.
Today
Six months later, Maya reads to Biscuit every week. She's started speaking in small groups at school. She still has quiet days, but she's found her voice鈥攚ith a little help from a very good dog.
