How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Reading Session with a Therapy Dog
Simple steps to help your child feel comfortable and excited about reading to a furry friend for the first time.
# Getting Ready for the Magic
Reading to a therapy dog can be a transformative experience for children, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here's how to set your child up for success.
Understanding What to Expect
Before the first session, talk to your child about what will happen. Explain that they'll meet a special dog who loves listening to stories. The dog won't interrupt, won't correct them, and will simply enjoy their company.
Practice at Home
Consider practicing with a stuffed animal first. This helps children get comfortable with the concept of reading aloud to a non-human audience. It might feel silly at first, but it builds confidence.
What to Bring
- A favorite book (or choose from the library's selection) - Comfortable clothing - A positive attitude
On the Day
Arrive a few minutes early so your child can observe the therapy dog from a distance. Let them approach when they feel ready. Most children are drawn in by the dog's calm demeanor within minutes.
After the Session
Ask open-ended questions about the experience. What did they read? Did the dog seem to enjoy it? Would they like to come back? These conversations reinforce the positive experience.
