How Our Reading Program Saved the Library's Saturday Hours
When budget cuts threatened weekend hours, our young readers and their families showed up to make a case.
# Community in Action
The email arrived on a Tuesday: due to budget constraints, Riverside Library would be cutting Saturday hours, including our reading program slot.
The Response
Within 24 hours, our volunteer coordinator received 47 messages from families. The common theme: "Please don't take this away."
Taking Action
Parents organized. Children wrote letters. One seven-year-old drew a picture of herself reading to Biscuit with the caption: "Please let us keep reading on Saturdays."
The City Council Meeting
The room was standing-room only. Twelve families spoke, including children who'd gained confidence through our program.
Diego, the boy who once refused to speak, stood at the microphone. "I learned to read because of the library dogs," he said. "Other kids need that chance too."
The Decision
Saturday hours were restored. The council cited "overwhelming community support" and "clear educational impact."
The Bigger Picture
This moment reminded us that reading programs create more than readers. They create community advocates, children who understand that their voices matter.
What We Learned
Never underestimate the power of a community that reads together. Or the impact of one brave boy who found his voice.

Paws & Pages Team
The Paws & Pages team is dedicated to building confident readers through the unconditional love of therapy dogs. Our team of educators, trainers, and volunteers share tips, stories, and resources to support literacy and the human-animal bond.
