Captain's Last Chapter: A Tribute to Our Oldest Reading Buddy
After seven years of service, Captain the Labrador is retiring. Here's the legacy he leaves behind.
# A Good Boy's Final Page
Every story has an ending, and Captain's remarkable journey as a therapy dog is reaching its final chapter. But what a story it's been.
The Early Days
Captain joined Paws & Pages in 2018, a three-year-old Labrador with a calm demeanor and an unusual trait: he seemed to lean in when children read, as if genuinely interested in every word.
By the Numbers
Over seven years, Captain has: - Attended over 500 reading sessions - Listened to approximately 2,000 children read - Visited 8 different libraries and schools - Never once shown impatience
The Stories We'll Remember
There was the boy who stuttered less and less each week until he didn't stutter at all. The girl who was terrified of dogs until Captain showed her there was nothing to fear. The teenager who volunteered as a reader and is now studying to become a speech therapist.
What's Next
At ten years old, Captain deserves his retirement. He'll spend his days with his handler, Michael, enjoying long naps and shorter walks. The reading program will miss him dearly.
The Legacy
Captain taught us that patience is a superpower, that presence matters more than perfection, and that sometimes the best thing you can do is simply listen.
Good boy, Captain. Good boy.
