Biscuit's Story
Biscuit was the very first Paws & Pages therapy dog, joining founder Dr. Emily Chen at the program's inception. As a puppy, she had an unusual habit of lying down next to anyone reading a book, resting her head on their feet as if listening intently. Emily noticed this during a casual library visit when Biscuit, then just 8 months old, approached a nervous child struggling through a picture book. The child's stammering stopped, her shoulders relaxed, and she finished the whole book while Biscuit dozed peacefully beside her. That magical moment sparked everything that followed. Today at 6 years old, Biscuit holds the distinguished title of 'Chief Comfort Officer' and has been present at over 500 reading sessions.
A Heart-Warming Moment
One autumn afternoon, a boy named Marcus arrived at the library clutching a book he refused to open. He hadn't read aloud in class for months—the fear of making mistakes had silenced him entirely. Biscuit waddled over, sat down heavily at his feet, and let out a contented sigh. Marcus laughed. 'She sounds like my grandpa,' he said. For the next twenty minutes, Marcus read 'Charlotte's Web' to Biscuit, who occasionally thumped her tail at exciting parts. When his mother came to pick him up, Marcus was beaming. 'Mom, Biscuit really liked the story,' he said. 'Can we come back tomorrow?' His mother later wrote to tell us that Marcus now reads to their family cat every night—and he's finally raising his hand in class again.
