A cheerful Cocker Spaniel with silky ears and a wagging tail. Rosie's enthusiasm is contagious!

Rosie's Story

Rosie's perpetually wagging tail started moving the moment she was born, or so her breeder claims. This buff Cocker Spaniel approaches every day—and every reading session—as the best day ever. Handler James Miller, a retired children's book author, adopted Rosie after his previous therapy dog passed away. Rosie's enthusiasm seemed to reignite his own passion for children's literacy. Her silky, floppy ears are irresistible to touch, and she's learned to position herself so readers can pet her ears while holding their books. At 3 years old, Rosie is one of the program's newest members but has already made an enormous impact with her infectious joy.

A Heart-Warming Moment

Seven-year-old Maya had been crying in school almost daily—the stress of learning to read had become overwhelming. Nothing was fun anymore. Her parents, worried about her mental health as much as her academics, tried Paws & Pages as a last resort. Maya entered her first session with red eyes and slumped shoulders. But Rosie bounded over (as much as handlers allow), tail a blur, entire body wiggling with happiness to meet her. Maya's tear-stained face broke into a surprised laugh. 'She's SO happy!' Within minutes, Maya was giggling while reading 'Dog Man' comics to Rosie, who seemed to vibrate with excitement at every page turn. After six weeks of sessions, Maya's mother reported something miraculous: Maya had started asking to read at home. 'I want to practice so I have more stories for Rosie,' she explained. The tears had stopped. Joy had returned.
