Pepper

Handler: Michelle Torres

A spirited Dalmatian with a spotted coat and spotted past. Pepper's rescue story inspires young readers to overcome their own challenges.

Pepper's Story

Pepper's journey to Paws & Pages began in hardship. This striking Dalmatian was found abandoned at a gas station, underweight and fearful. Handler Michelle Torres, a veterinary technician, fostered him through recovery. Despite his rough start, Pepper's trust in humans returned completely—a testament to canine resilience. Michelle often shares Pepper's story with young readers, showing that difficult beginnings don't define endings. Pepper's distinctive spotted coat makes him immediately memorable, and children love counting his spots while reading. At 4 years old, Pepper has become the program's 'overcomer'—living proof that challenges can be conquered with patience and support.

A Heart-Warming Moment

Nine-year-old Tyler came to Paws & Pages not for reading help but for emotional support. His family had recently experienced homelessness, and Tyler's world felt unstable. His grades had plummeted, including reading. When Michelle told Tyler about Pepper's rescue story—found alone, scared, but now happy and helpful—Tyler leaned forward. 'He was homeless too?' Michelle nodded. 'But look at him now. He helps kids every day.' Tyler looked at Pepper with new eyes. 'Maybe...' he started, then stopped. 'Maybe what?' 'Maybe if Pepper can be okay, I can be okay too.' Tyler started reading to Pepper about animals who overcame challenges: the ugly duckling, the little engine that could. Each story reinforced the message. By year's end, Tyler's family had stabilized, his reading was back on track, and he'd drawn a picture of Pepper with the caption: 'My friend who understands.'
