A distinguished Standard Poodle with impeccable manners. Jasper brings elegance and calm to every session.
Jasper's Story
Jasper carries himself like royalty—appropriate, given his background. This silver Standard Poodle was bred for show but never quite had the competitive temperament. His breeder, recognizing his gentle nature, donated him to a therapy dog training program. Handler Karen O'Brien, a former etiquette instructor, was his perfect match. Together, they bring a sense of occasion to every reading session. Jasper sits with perfect posture, creating an atmosphere of respect and importance. Children often sit up straighter in his presence, unconsciously mirroring his dignity. At 6 years old, Jasper specializes in working with children who need structure and calm—his consistent, predictable presence helps anxious readers know exactly what to expect.
A Heart-Warming Moment
Eight-year-old Daniel was on the autism spectrum and found unpredictability deeply distressing. Most therapy animals, with their variable behaviors, made him anxious. But Jasper's consistent routine was perfect. Every session, Jasper sat in the exact same spot, in the exact same position. Daniel could count on it. 'Jasper is like a statue,' Daniel told his parents approvingly. 'Statues don't surprise you.' With Jasper's predictable calm, Daniel began to read. He discovered he loved non-fiction—facts were predictable too. Within months, Daniel was reading encyclopedia entries to Jasper, explaining fascinating facts about space and dinosaurs. 'Jasper is a good listener,' Daniel observed. 'He never interrupts with questions.' For Daniel, that was the highest compliment.
