Ginger

Handler: Patricia Moore

A wise Shiba Inu with an independent spirit. Ginger's quiet confidence helps anxious readers find their own.

Ginger's Story

Ginger breaks the mold of typical therapy dogs. The dignified Shiba Inu isn't cuddly or overtly affectionate—she's calm, composed, and quietly supportive. Handler Patricia Moore, a retired therapist, recognized that some children don't respond well to enthusiastic, in-your-face animals. Ginger offers something different: peaceful coexistence. She'll sit nearby without demanding attention, creating a low-pressure environment where anxious children can relax. Her cat-like independence paradoxically makes her excellent at building trust with guarded kids. At 6 years old, Ginger is often paired with children who've had negative experiences with dogs or who find high-energy animals overwhelming. Her specialty is teaching kids that comfort can be quiet.

A Heart-Warming Moment

Eleven-year-old Alex was selectively mute at school, speaking only at home. Reading aloud was completely out of the question. Traditional therapy approaches felt too 'pushy.' But Ginger's calm indifference was different. She didn't expect anything from Alex. During their first session, Alex didn't read—just sat near Ginger, who was grooming her paw with dignified disinterest. Week two, Alex whispered a few words to Ginger. Week three, a full sentence. By week eight, Alex was reading complete pages in a soft but steady voice. 'Ginger never looks at me like I have to talk,' Alex explained to Patricia. 'She just... is there. So I can just... be there too. And sometimes being there includes reading.' Alex's school counselor called it a breakthrough they'd been working toward for three years.
