Handler: Diane Kowalski

An easygoing Beagle with a nose for great stories. Charlie's happy-go-lucky attitude is infectious!

Charlie's Story

Charlie the Beagle was found wandering near a used bookstore in downtown Booktown, which the staff took as a sign. Handler Diane Kowalski, the store's owner, adopted him immediately. Charlie developed an amusing habit: whenever a customer sat down to browse, he'd curl up at their feet and fall asleep, creating a cozy reading atmosphere. Regulars started calling him 'the bookstore dog' and would specifically visit to read with Charlie nearby. When Diane retired and sold the store, Charlie's fan base followed them to Paws & Pages. At 5 years old, Charlie brings his bookstore charm to every session—there's something about his happy, uncomplicated presence that makes readers of all ages feel at ease. His signature move: a soft 'awoo' when sessions end, as if asking for one more chapter.

A Heart-Warming Moment

Twin brothers Ethan and Noah, age 7, had opposite reading problems: Ethan read too fast and missed details, while Noah read so slowly he lost the plot. Their exasperated parents signed them up for Paws & Pages, hoping for a miracle. Charlie provided something better: balance. During their first joint session, Ethan raced through a page while Charlie snoozed. 'He's not even listening!' Ethan complained. But when Noah read his page slowly and carefully, Charlie's ears twitched with each word, and he opened one eye at the exciting part. 'See? Charlie likes when you can actually understand the story,' Noah told his brother. Something clicked. Ethan started pacing himself to keep Charlie's attention, while Noah gained confidence from Charlie's visible engagement. Their parents report they now read to each other at home, finding a middle ground that works for both.
