Captain's Story
Captain earned his name honestly. This energetic yellow Labrador spent his first year with a retired Coast Guard officer who read nautical adventure novels aloud every evening. Captain developed an unmistakable habit: his ears perk up during exciting scenes, and his tail creates a rhythmic thump-thump-thump during suspenseful moments. When handler Michael Rodriguez adopted him, Captain's unique 'reading responses' were already legendary in their neighborhood. A friend suggested Paws & Pages, and Captain passed his therapy certification with flying colors—though the examiner noted he seemed 'almost too engaged' during the reading portion. At 7 years old, Captain has become famous for his visible reactions to stories, making children feel like the world's best storytellers.
A Heart-Warming Moment
Twins Sophia and Maya, age 8, were competitive about everything—except reading, which neither enjoyed. Their teacher suggested separate reading sessions to reduce comparison anxiety. But Captain had other plans. During their first joint session, the girls took turns reading a pirate adventure. When Sophia read about the hero narrowly escaping a storm, Captain's tail went wild. Maya giggled and said, 'He likes your part!' But when Maya read the treasure discovery scene, Captain sat up alertly and barked once in apparent celebration. Both girls dissolved into laughter. 'He likes BOTH of us!' Maya exclaimed. They left that day asking if they could read to Captain together every week. Their mother reported they now do 'reading performances' at home, complete with Captain-style sound effects, and their reading levels have jumped significantly.
