A Grandmother's Gift: How Three Generations Now Read Together
When Martha brought her granddaughter to a reading session, she didn't expect to find her own love of reading renewed.
# Three Generations, One Story
Martha, 68, thought her role was simply to accompany her granddaughter Emma to reading sessions. She never expected to rediscover her own passion for books.
The Reluctant Companion
"I'm just here to drive her," Martha told us that first day. Her reading glasses stayed in her purse.
Watching From Afar
For weeks, Martha sat in the waiting area while Emma read to Luna. She'd scroll through her phone, occasionally glancing up when Emma laughed at something in her book.
An Invitation
One day, Emma asked her grandmother to join them. "Luna wants to meet you," she said, with seven-year-old certainty.
Martha hesitated, but Luna's gentle eyes won her over.
The Unexpected Turn
Sitting with Emma and Luna, Martha found herself picking up a discarded picture book. She'd forgotten how beautiful children's illustrations could be.
Today
Martha now reads to Luna too, working through chapter books she missed in her busy parenting years. Emma reads beside her, and sometimes鈥攚hen Emma's mother can make it鈥攖hree generations share the experience together.
A New Tradition
"We've started reading together at home," Martha tells us. "Not because Emma needs practice anymore, but because we both love it."
